SPF records for email address

Case Study 1. We noticed an email was returned to us by the email server with the message below:

Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

This is the mail system at host mail104.syd.optusnet.com.au.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster. If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message. The mail system

<------@eq.edu.au>: host mxb.eq.edu.au[203.10.121.2] said: 550 5.1.1 < sales@cits.net.au > sender rejected, invalid SPF record, please visit

http://www.openspf.org/Why?s=mfrom;id=sales@cits.net.au;ip=211.29.132.246;r=--------@eq.edu.au

(in reply to RCPT TO command)

In this scenario, the recipients email server required authentication of incoming emails, such as a SPF record. Reason being the email address sales@cits.net.au was created via our website hosting panel. However is sent via the ISP Outgoing mail server optusnet.com.au. Hence the recipient required a SPF record to ensure the email was from us and not spam etc.

The solution is simply to add a SPF record in your web hosting Domain panel configuration.

The SPF record is added to the web hosting panel - Domain - cits.net.au - DNS Zone Records. Then wait approx. 24hours for proprogation of the new record around the internet and issue is resolved.

ASP.Net Error in VS2010

A problem software developers face continually is obsolete code, for example, the first warning we noticed that Microsoft had deprecated the AppSettings property was when a warning displayed when we ran Build command i.e.

warning BC40000: 'Public Shared ReadOnly Property AppSettings As System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection' is obsolete: 'This method is obsolete, it has been replaced by System.Configuration!System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings'.

The old code line read:

Dim objConn As New OleDbConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("DSN"))

The answer was to change the code to:

Dim objConn As New OleDbConnection(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("DSN"))

Note: The build was already targeted to .NET Framework 4 and referenced in the website hence we didn't have to modify much code. You should check your project has a refence to System.Configuration also, such as:

1. In Solution Explorer right click your website path
2. Select Property Pages
3. Select References
4. Select Add
5. Find System.Configuration and select
6. Click Ok then save the configuration

Tip use the tab button on keyboard to enter the dropdown suggestions in Visual Studio. Not the enter key.
